Esther Mwende Mwamyugah, 28, understands the pain of bringing up a child born with a congenital anomaly.

Two-year-old Riziki Shee Mwangare was born without the posterior opening for removing waste. In addition, the young one had both the male and the female organs.

Dr Nicodemus Mwea, a senior paediatric surgeon at the Coast Province General Hospital (CPGH) notes that young Shee suffers from proximal hypospadias and anorectal malformation.

Hypospadias is a birth defect of the urethra in the male where the urinary opening is not at the usual location on the head of the penis.

Between November 2015 and March last year, doctors made a channel in the stomach to enable him to pass stool like other normal children.

Apart from the corrective surgery, young Shee will require an operation to pave way for urine.

Subsequent operations would also aim to have the testicles which are currently located inside the body brought out.

The corrective surgeries would also have the female organs “sealed” given past biopsy tests have indicated that Shee is male.

Biopsy specimen from his private parts showed that he is indeed a male,” says Esther holding out a document from Lancet Laboratories containing the test results.

I’m the only one in the whole village with a child with this type of condition. Sometimes neighbours laugh out loudly at my son whenever he ventures out to play,” says Esther.

A letter by her doctor estimates the corrective surgery to be conducted at Mombasa Hospital or Kijabe Mission Hospital would cost KSh 330,000.

She says earnings from her husband who is a boda boda operator can hardly support the family leave alone pay for the treatment.

I used to wash cloths for people but I was forced to quit so as to take care of my son,” she says.
